37 pilot micro hydro power plants are to be built in Uzbekistan in the next two years
This decision was approved by the Government of Uzbekistan. All the HPPs will be built on natural and artificial waterways in Jizzakh, Namangan, Syrdarya and Khorezm regions.
Contracts will be concluded solely with manufacturers and internationally recognized equipment suppliers through direct negotiations.
The pilot projects for the construction of micro hydro power plants will be funded from the private funds of Uzbekhydroenergo, investments of private investors, as well as loans of commercial banks, including foreign banks.
In the future, aiming to reduce the cost of the projects, the government assigned Uzbekhydroenergo to prepare proposals for localization of production of the components for the construction and operation of micro hydro power plants on the basis of the Suvsanoatmash plant.
The total capacity of all the HPPs will be 6,100 kW, and their cost will exceed $8.5 million.
The head of our state initiated a program on the establishment of micro HPPs throughout the country during his visit to the Ferghana region this June. The President noted that these facilities are environmentally friendly, accessible, and distinguish by simplified processes of technological development and operation. It is planned that the Fergana Polytechnic Institute will train specialists for such plants.
Today, only 11% of the total electricity generation in the republic falls to hydro power plants. Its major part is generated by thermal power plants. Electricity consumption has been growing year by year in the country. In 2000, the monthly consumption per one family was 114 kW/h, while by 2016 it increased by 35% and reached 160 kW/h.

It is planned to revamp a total of 22 major substations in Tashkent, and 10 in the regions of the republic. This should significantly reduce technical losses and operating and maintenance costs.
It is also planned to purchase mobile substations of 110 kV medium voltage and emergency recovery systems for prompt elimination of disconnections on the main power transmission lines.
The new technology will increase the sustainability of the national energy system. The project will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an amount equal to the annual energy consumption of over 6 million families in Uzbekistan.
The works will be financed by $75.3 million of Uzbekenergo’s private funds, a $92 million loan of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and a $58 million loan of the International Development Association. Another $66.8 million will be invested by the government of the republic in the form of tax and customs privileges.
About $128 million will be invested in the purchase of all sorts of equipment, $56 million – for construction and installation works, and the rest of the funds will cover other costs.
The transportation of electricity from generating sources to distribution enterprises is carried out by a Unitary Enterprise Uzelektroset by main electric networks with a voltage of 110-500 kV, and length of over 9,700 kilometers. Transformers with a total capacity of 21.3 MVA are installed at 76 substations.
