On May 27, the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Feruza Eshmatova met with OSCE/ODIHR Needs Assessment Mission experts Alexey Gromov and Martina Barker-Ciganikova.
The Ombudsman informed about the reforms carried out in the country in recent years on the protection of human rights and freedoms, initiated by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
It was noted that starting in 2021, within the framework of the National Preventive Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture under the Ombudsman, systematic monitoring visits to penitentiary institutions, pre-trial detention centers and other closed institutions with the participation of representatives of the public and the media will be organized. It was also noted that the practice of transmitting information to parliament on these issues has been established.
The parties also exchanged views on the analysis of appeals to the Ombudsman in 2021, Ombudsman’s role in an important political process in the country – the election of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
