The President of Uzbekistan congratulates the new WTO Director-General

The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has congratulated the Director-General of the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on being appointed to this high and responsible post, reports “Dunyo” IA correspondent.

According to the Press Service of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in his message, the Head of the state expressed confidence in the implementation, under the leadership of the new Director-General, of effective reforms to enhance the role and authority of this organization, as well as effective measures to overcome the global crisis and further develop the system of international trade relations.

The importance of continuing close cooperation in the earliest possible accession of Uzbekistan to the WTO was emphasized.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a 66-year-old representative of Nigeria, became the first woman and the first representative of Africa to serve as WTO Director-General. She was elected by consensus at a special general meeting and will take office on March 1.

On July 7, 2020, after an almost 15-year break, the meetings of the joint working group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization resumed.
