Uzbekistan, UK enhance cooperation on human rights

On 21 January, the First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Akmal Saidov met with the International Ambassador for Human Rights, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Rita French, via videoconference.

The event was also attended by the British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Timothy Torlot.

The Uzbek side provided information on the phased implementation of the National Strategy on Human Rights, the eradication of child labor, the implementation of international labor standards and norms, the new laws adopted, the strengthening of women’s rights, the simplification of the registration procedure for non-governmental non-profit organizations, and the strengthening the protection of media freedom.

The parties noted the importance of further deepening inter-parliamentary ties. The significant role of this process in the early ratification of international treaties, which will take relations between the two countries to a new stage, was emphasized.

Views were exchanged on the measures taken in Uzbekistan and the UK to counter the spread of coronavirus. The need was noted for intensifying bilateral cooperation to prevent the negative impact of the pandemic on trade and economic relations between the two countries.

Following the meeting, the mutual commitment was reaffirmed to the comprehensive strengthening of practical cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UK.
