BAN KI-MOON: "I PAY TRIBUTE TO THE EFFORTS OF PRESIDENT ISLAM KARIMOV ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRONG TIES BETWEEN UZBEKISTAN AND THE UNITED NATIONS"

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his condolences to the people and Government of Uzbekistan in connection with the passing of President Islam Karimov.

"The Secretary-General is saddened by the news of the death of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. He extends his sincere condolences to the bereaved family of President Karimov, the Government and the people of Uzbekistan", - says the official statement of the UN .

It is noted that Ban Ki-moon pays tribute to the efforts of President Islam Karimov on the development of strong ties between Uzbekistan and the United Nations, as well as on promoting regional and global peace and security, including through facilitating the entry into force in 2009 of the treaty to establish the Central Asian Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone.

The Secretary-General has underlined the UN’s commitment to continue working closely with the Government and the people of Uzbekistan.
