COMPETITION FOR RIO OLYMPICS 2016 BEGINS

Asian Championship Cup for players under 23 (U23) has launched today in Doha, Qatar, and will continue until January 28. Olympic team of our country presents Uzbekistan in this prestigious competition.

Samvel Babayan’s team, tasked to enter the top three teams, which gives a ticket for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Uzbekistan Olympic team is in “C” group, thus the national teams will play against Republic of Korea, Iraq and Yemen. Our compatriots will hold the first game tomorrow against South Koreans; they will compete against their peers from Iraq on January 16. Yemen national team will be its competitor in the final round of the group stage.

The quartet, according to experts, is one of the strongest in the tournament, which presents three roughly equal teams (South Korea, Uzbekistan and Iraq), and games between them promise to be very interesting. One of the facilities for our delegation is that all three meetings will be held in Doha at “Suhaim bin Hamad” stadium.

Our team started its preparation for the tournament well in advance. Training camps were held in three phases in the UAE: in Ajmane on December 2-14, in Dubai on December 19-28 and January 2-9. During the period, the players conducted a series of friendly matches with the local “Ajman” (4:0), with peers from Japan (0:0), North Korea (4:2), Syria (0:1), Qatar (2:0) and others.

On the eve of the Continental Cup, S. Babayan, head coach of the Olympic team of Uzbekistan, has shared his opinion on the team’s preparation. Thus, he believes that physical fitness is one of the important components in modern football. Those teams which are not physically ready for the tournament will achieve nothing. Therefore, the coaching staff of our national team paid great attention to the essue.

In spite of everything, the first game will show how the team is prepared. Friendlies identified the players’ strengths and weaknesses. But today the balance between all the lines is achieved. The coach also made a focus on weather conditions. According to him, the perfect weather for the game now is in Qatar. In such circumstances, it is possible and necessary to show a modern, dynamic football.

Thus, Uzbekistan Olympic team’s fighting for a ticket to Rio starts with the game against South Korea U23. The game will start tomorrow at 21:30 (Tashkent time).
