European Geopolitical Forum: A far-sighted strategy of Uzbekistan became a reality

European think tanks continue to comment on the initiative of President Islam Karimov on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons in Central Asia.

For example, a popular independent European Analysis Centre European Geopolitical Forum, specializing in the coverage of security policy and current events on the international agenda, published information and analytical material called "forward-looking strategy of President Islam Karimov on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons in Central Asia, embodied in reality". The author of the article is expert on geopolitics of the analytical center Ben Pherson.

In the introductory part of published work, the author of material notes that in May 2014 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York was ratified document that has created a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia (CANWFZ) and received the unanimous approval of the five "nuclear powers" - the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and China.

"The initiative to create zone has been put forward by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov to the UN General Assembly in 1993.

The final international legal registration of the Treaty on Nuclear Free Zone received after the ratification of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, and the signing of the five nuclear powers Protocol on security assurances, which have a legal obligation to respect and observe the status of a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia.

This zone free of nuclear weapons joined other international treaties that prohibit the use of nuclear weapons, such as Latin America, South Pacific, Southeast Asia and Africa", - the author writes.

In article its emphasized that this initiative represents another important step in ensuring the safety not only in the region but also worldwide.

"It is particularly noteworthy that the population of the region suffered the consequences of the time when in Kazakhstan 459 nuclear tests held, which had been contaminated by not only the territory, but also hurt people. In addition, the region is close to the nuclear powers that played a role in the power struggle between East and West.

Also, the spread of nuclear weapons in Central Asia could create additional problems for Security and exacerbates geopolitical trends that may endanger not only the region, but also Eurasia. In this regard, the adoption CANWFZ is timely and relevant.

At the same time, this contract is a great success of Uzbekistan, which deserves special attention. It is the latest among similar documents for the establishment of nuclear-free zones in the world. It also has a provision for preventing non-state actors attempts to acquire nuclear weapons.

In this regard, the initiative has become an important basis to strengthen security cooperation in Central Asia, and is one of the most significant effort, involving all five Central Asian states. Thus it has been demonstrated political unity of particular importance for strengthening peace and stability in region in the future", - said B.Pherson.
