As part of the "Program of development of tourism in the Khorezm region for 2013-2015" a variety of festivals, shows, theatrical performances are carried out, which attract many thousands of tourists visiting the region.
So, on August 8, the square "Ko’hna Ark" of State Museum-Reserve "Ichan Kala" (Khiva district) opens the festival-fair "Gurvak - a symbol of Khorezm melons".
The fair is held in order to promote melon as a special vine crop among foreign tourists and citizens of our country.
Since ancient times, Khorezm region is known for a significant portion of all known varieties of melons cultivated. A variety of winter sorts of melons such as Ala-hamma, Ak-kosh, Almurti Gulyabi, Shakar-para, no less juicy and fragrant summer sorts Ak-novvat Khorezm, Torlama can not leave indifferent those who have ever tried them. Region has gained special fame for Gurvak sort, after which a festival acquired its name.
About 70 farmers from 10 districts of Khorezm will demonstrate more than 40 varieties of melons. Festival-fair will inlcude the competition "The sweetest melon" which participants will compete in the selection of seed, namely the seeds of "gurvak" sort, they will determine the most suitable location for planting the seeds, will pick the sweetest melon, will share melon slicing skills, will determine the variety of melon, will show their mastery of drying and storage for the winter melon.
In addition, the event will host a demonstration of other melons, fruits and vegetables. Watermelons, pumpkins, apples, pears, peaches, grapes, dried fruits - all that is famous for the region, will be able to see the visitors to the fair. It also will host a festival of folklore-ethnographic groups, competition for young singers, theatrical performances, as well as display products crafts.
