For the first time the Day of the English language, as well as other days of the official languages of the United Nations celebrated in 2010. The purpose of the new holidays - to strengthen the tradition of multilingualism in the world. The UN has allocated six days in the calendar - one for each of the official languages.
The date of the celebration of the English language became the birthday of William Shakespeare - the great English poet, writer, most famous dramatist in the world. From the pen of Shakespeare published five poems, 10 chronicles, 11 tragedies, 17 comedies and 154 sonnets. Among his works - known to any civilized inhabitant of the planet "Romeo and Juliet," "Othello," "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark", "King Lear" and others. Due to the wide spread occurrence of the English language, many fans of Shakespeare read his books in original.
Today English is a world language spoken by more than 1 billion people in dozens of countries. It is not only English people’s language, but also people in the US, Canada, Ireland, Malta, Australia, New Zealand. It is used as an official in some countries of Asia and Africa.
Uzbekistan pays great attention to the study of English in secondary, vocational and higher education institutions.
From the first years of independence cooperation with British partners on a wide spread of English has been established in our country. Uzbek-British cooperation in the field of education demonstrates 17 years of successful operation since the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two governments and the opening of the British Council office in Tashkent in 1996.
British Council projects in Uzbekistan aimed at supporting national education reforms and the creation of opportunities for professional development and improvement of English language skills.
In all schools, high schools, colleges and universities of the country introduced a course of learning English as a compulsory subject. In addition in such educational institutions as the Uzbek State World Languages University, Tashkent State Oriental Studies Institute, University of World Economy and Diplomacy and others provided a thorough study of the language course.
The country has all the conditions for a comprehensive study of the English language. Each library provides free access to a variety of textbooks, manuals, dictionaries and other English-language literature. In every city of the country operate specialized centers for the study of language.
Measures to improve the system of education in the field of English language learning being taken at level of the country’s Leadership.
According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures to further improve the studying of foreign languages" dated December 10, 2012 and the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers "On approval of the State educational standards for foreign language continuing education system" dated May 8, 2013 in the field of education introduced State educational standard of continuing education system for the study of foreign languages, particularly English.
The teaching staff of local schools regularly improves knowledge and methods of training in centers of excellence. Also in conjunction with the Ministry of National Education, Higher and Secondary Special Education and the British Council in Uzbekistan held a variety of seminars, workshops, forums and conferences to enhance the quality of teaching, the introduction of modern teaching methods and upgraded teaching programs on the latest international standards.
Thus, in November 2014 in the framework of a similar joint project was presented an intensive program for English language teachers involved in the project "The new training program for teachers of English".
This program is carried out in the framework of large-scale reforms in education and is a platform for further development potential in the implementation of national reforms in the English language in Uzbekistan through the professional development of teachers. The new curriculum was developed in partnership with the Norwich Institute for Language Education.
Confirmation of a significant attention to this issue serves Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On additional measures to improve the skills and professional skills of teachers of foreign languages educational institutions" dated March 25, 2015. According to the document introduced weekly enhancement of professional skills of foreign languages teachers, set the frequency of compulsory qualifying exam teachers.
Also established partnerships with many universities abroad. Among them - the University of Westminster, London Metropolitan University, University of Norwich and the Universities of Bath, Cambridge, East England (UK), University of Georgia (USA) and many others.
In general, the country pays great attention to the learning of English. Almost all students in the country learn this language. This fact is further evidence of the importance and priority of English not only in education, but also in society.
