OSCE OBSERVERS MONITOR THE RUN-UP TO PRESIDENTIAL BALLOT

Activities of the mission of long-term observers of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on monitoring the presidential elections continue in different regions of Uzbekistan.

In particular, members of the Mission Vsevolod Perevozchikov and Hartvig Hantram Hans Kaboz met with representatives of the district electoral commission of Karakalpakstan. The international observers were briefed about the course of the election campaign, the powers of the regional election commission and the work conducted by it, as well as about the established polling stations, which are fitted out in accordance with modern requirements and are provided with literature on elections.

It was noted at the meeting that the district election commission regularly informs the citizens about its activities; moreover, it makes an efficient use of the mass media opportunities. A press center was organized under the district election commission for covering the elections.

The international observers were interested in conditions crated for the effective operation of the district election commission.

Members of the OSCE ODIHR Mission Alexander Pashedko and Toril Land had acquainted themselves with the preparation for elections in the course of their visit to Jizzakh region.

A meeting was held at the Jizzakh district election commission on the election of president of Uzbekistan, at which the international observers were informed about the activities of 466 polling stations, which conduct work on the registration of voters and organization of early voting.

The observers were also interested in the activities of polling stations, observation of norms fixed in the election legislation, and presidential candidates’ meetings with their electorate. During the talks the guests were provided with detailed information on the composition and activities of district and precinct commissions, about the presidential candidates’ pre-election propaganda activities and equal conditions created for them on the basis of legislative requirements.
