Meeting at the U.S. Senate

On July 25, 2018, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan met with the U.S. Senator for Mississippi, Helsinki Commission Chair Roger Wicker, in Washington.

As the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs, the parties discussed a number of issues on Uzbekistan – American agenda. The need to continue and expand Uzbekistan – American inter-parliamentary dialogue, as well as cooperation in the field of ensuring human rights was underscored.

Roger Wicker noted the serious progress achieved by Uzbekistan under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The Senator who is one of the initiators of inviting Uzbekistan to the Ministerial Conference on Promotion of Religious Freedom, in Washington, welcomed the participation of the representative Uzbekistan delegation in the forum and expressed support for the ongoing political, socio-economic and other reforms in the country aimed at further democratization of all spheres of life.

Senator Roger Wicker became one of the developers of the recent U.S. Senate resolution, which highly appreciates the adoption of measures on improving the situation in the sphere of religious freedom since the presidential elections in Uzbekistan in December 2016, including the approval by the chambers of the Oliy Majlis of the roadmap for implementation of recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief of the UN Human Rights Council during the year.
