PUBLICITY AND TRANSPARENCY

Preparations for the elections of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan are currently in full swing. To familiarize the foreign public with this process, Uzbekistan’s diplomatic missions abroad have been conducting various events. In Brussels, a briefing has been organized with regard to the forthcoming elections with the participation of representatives of European Union institutions, analytical and research centers, as well as the mass media of the Benelux countries.

The focus was on cardinal reforms being undertaken in Uzbekistan in perfecting the country’s electoral legislation, which serve as a solid basis for holding elections in an atmosphere of equality, transparency, in full compliance with the nation’s laws as well as the basic norms and principles of international law. It was noted that the country has established a sustainable and dynamic political system, a bicameral parliament working on a professional basis, the necessary organizational, legal, material and technical conditions for a free and active participation of citizens and political parties in addressing the most critical issues in socio-economic development and public construction.

Participants emphasized that all of this is a vivid reflection of the practical results of democratic reforms carried out in Uzbekistan, and agreed that the upcoming presidential elections will undoubtedly prove an important step towards enhancement of those reforms.

OPINION

Frank Schwalbach-Hoth, consultant of the European Parliament:

“A high political culture has formed in the Uzbek society. Citizens are well aware that their voices, will and wishes have effect on their present and future. Responsibility of every member of society for the country is what distinguishes Uzbekistan at the present stage of socio-political life. Participation in the election of President of the republic from among candidates nominated by political parties is important from the point of view of democracy and equality in this important political process. Voters are given the opportunity to support a particular candidate who expresses their views and defends their interests. This is one of the fundamental principles of the free will of the people, contributing to the consolidation of constitutional state and its further successful development towards democracy.”

Lucas Maurer, the European Commission:

“Today, Uzbekistan is a key state in Central Asia, the development of which is closely monitored by the international community. The briefing testifies to the fact that interest in Uzbekistan has been growing in Europe. The nomination of candidates from all political parties for the presidency of the republic is a direct result of reforms to enhance the democratization and liberalization of society, building on the provisions of the Constitution. Also worthy of special attention is the fact that the monitoring of the progress of the preparation and holding of the elections will be carried out by representatives of international organizations, which once again demonstrates the openness of the country and its compliance with the universally accepted norms and standards.”
