These days, Uzbekistan and Japan celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations instituted between the two countries. On the occasion of this jubilee date, participants of a briefing in Tokyo have talked about the progress made in the modern Uzbekistan and the evolution of bilateral ties between the two friendly nations.
The event was organized by the Japan-Uzbekistan Friendship Association jointly with the Embassy of our republic in that country. Among the invited to the briefing were members of the Japanese parliament and government, staff of ministries and agencies, public figures, scientists and entrepreneurs. They were presented detailed information on the outcomes of socio-economic development in Uzbekistan in 2016 and the plans for 2017. The occasion also included a presentation of investment opportunities in Uzbekistan, the privileges and preferences guaranteed for foreign businesses operating in the country.
During his keynote speech, President of Japan-Uzbekistan Friendship Association, Nobuhiko Shima, praised the current state and prospects of bilateral relations. According to him, in Tokyo, Uzbekistan is considered "a reliable and key strategic partner in Central Asia, cooperation with which is a priority in the foreign policy strategy of Japan in the region." Shima said in particular that "our ties have been growing promptly in many directions, which has been facilitated also by the regular exchange of visits at various levels. Uzbekistan, given its political, economic and demographic potential, plays an extremely important role in ensuring peace and tranquility in Central Asia. It is not surprising that Japan pays special attention to the enhancement and advancement of partnership with Uzbekistan."
Former Japanese Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Fumihiko Kato, shared with his successful experience in this country. Over the years of my service in Uzbekistan, the diplomat said, I came to witness its progressive advancement in many areas. “I particularly admired the interethnic peace and harmony prevailing on the Uzbek land. In 2016, the outstanding statesman and great politician Islam Karimov passed away, a loss not only to Uzbekistan, but also the whole world. The misfortune has united the people of the country to a greater extent, who voted during the December 2016 presidential elections for the continuation and deepening of large-scale reforms initiated by him, for the continuation of sustainable economic growth and improvement in the people’s welfare. For my part, even in Japan, away from Uzbekistan, I will support my beloved country and make every effort to build up Japanese-Uzbek relations."
