SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS – AN IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT FACTOR

XII International Symposium on “Chemistry, biology and technology of natural compounds” is being held at the Institute of chemistry of plant substances of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The event, organized in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Institute of chemistry of plant substances named after academician Sobir Yunusov, is being attended by representatives of various ministries and departments, educational institutions, as well as leading scientists and specialists of scientific and scientific-production centers of more than 10 countries, including China, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Uzbekistan and others.

At the opening ceremony of the symposium, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan A.Aripov read the Congratulatory message of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the staff of the Institute of chemistry of plant substances.

Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan I.Abdurakhmonov, Director of the Institute of chemistry of plant substances Sh.Sadullayev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences M.Yunusov, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan S.Adekenov and others noted that this traditional forum has special significance for the development of science, creation and effective implementation of scientific developments in the real sector of the economy.

In our country, a unique school of chemistry, biology and technology of plant substances has been formed along with other scientific schools. The Institute of chemistry of plant substances of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan is rightfully considered as the largest scientific-research center in Central Asia on studying the chemistry of natural compounds, creation of medicines and agricultural preparations on their basis, conduction of fundamental and applied research in the sphere.

About 600 types of plants suitable for use in medicine with the content of alkaloids, terpenoids and phenolic compounds, as well as about 250 plant species containing essential oils have been identified due to the long-term research of the institute’s staff in the plant world of our country. As a result of research, about 3 thousand kinds of compounds were obtained from plants, more than 10 thousand new compounds were synthesized. Pharmacology and toxicology of more than 2 thousand compounds were studied, 60 medicines were tested, 35 of them were introduced into medical practice.

In the years of independence, more than 500 types of plants were studied, of which more than 1,2 thousand useful substances obtained. The structure of 246 new alkaloids, 12 proanthocyanidins, more than 70 flavonoids, about 20 coumarins, 27 diterpenes and triterpene glycosides, 15 phytoecdysteroids, and 4 iridoids is proved. The effect of more than 5 thousand heterocyclic compounds was synthesized and studied. A method of creating asymmetric centers that enhance the possibility of modification of heterocyclic compounds has been developed.

As a result, more than 110 developments have been patented, 41 of them are being applied today. Substances for more than 20 medicines are being produced at the pilot plant under the institute. In addition, 100 tons of plant raw materials are processed annually.

Import of “Fenasal”, “Galantamine hydrobromide”, “Medamin”, “Albendazole”, “Cytisinum”, “Kukumazim” and some types of immunoassay test systems has been completely replaced due to scientific research. “Allapinin” medicine that is developed by scientists of the institute is exported to Russia. In 2007, the group of developers of this medicine was awarded the State prize of the Republic of Uzbekistan of the first degree in the field of science and technology.

At the IX Republican fair of innovative ideas, technologies and projects held in 2016, the Institute of chemistry of plant substances was awarded a gold medal “For the best invention (patent) and its commercialization” for the patent of “Method of obtaining a drug with antiarrhythmic effect”.

The current symposium is devoted to chemistry, biology and technology of natural compounds and their derivatives, the creation of original medicines on a natural basis and other issues. During the event, the achievements and perspectives in natural compounds study, the science, technology and innovation based economic development in eco region, the isolation and biological activities of diterpenoidic compounds from the medicinal herbs of Central Asia, aromatic plants and essential oils of Cyprus, the registration of herbal products, bioactive natural compounds from traditional Chinese medicines, effects of Nagilactone B on atherosclerosis and other issues were discussed.

Within the framework of the symposium, sectional meetings on low-molecular bioregulators, medicines and biologically active additives, chemistry of natural substances are being held. Following the international symposium, recommendations on training of young specialists will be developed and ways for further development of scientific and practical research will be outlined.
