The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure Council (SCO RATS) held its thirtieth meeting in Tashkent on 30 March, presided over by China and joined by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and SCO RATS Executive Committee.
SCO RATS harmonised its 2016 report and reviewed the Cooperation Programme on Combatting Terrorism, Separatism, and Extremism 2016-2018, as well as some of SCO RATS Council’s earlier decisions. The SCO RATS Executive Committee’s work was commended.
The meeting also approved SCO’s draft Anti-extremism Convention.
The joint military exercise ‘Cooperation 2016’ in Uzbekistan was also praised.
The meeting agreed to hold joint anti-terrorism exercises, border operations and the 5th Scientific Anti-Terrorism and Anti-Extremism Conference in 2017.
Anti-terrorism measures by SCO Member States’ respective authorities were revised and aligned.
Distinctive employees both at Member States’ respective authorities and at SCO RATS Executive Committee were awarded.
The Council also discussed staffing, SCO RATS Executive Committee funding, and legal underpinning for anti-terrorism efforts.
The next SCO RATS Council meeting will take place in September 2017 in China.
