SEOUL HOSTS FORUM “REPUBLIC OF KOREA – CENTRAL ASIA”

The Ninth Forum of cooperation “Republic of Korea – Central Asia” was held in Seoul (South Korea) on 5 October 2015.

The delegation led by Deputy Foreign Ministers of South Korea, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan attended the forum. The delegation of Uzbekistan was led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gayrat Fozilov.

The forum was dedicated to the theme of “Eurasia Initiative: Promoting Connectivity between Korea and Central Asia”.

The five participating Central Asian countries reaffirmed their support for the Korean government’s Eurasia Initiative, which seeks to promote co-prosperity and cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the Central Asian region.

The participants noted that cooperation between South Korea and Central Asian states are developing in all directions and the Forum of cooperation “Republic of Korea – Central Asia” plays an important role in the process.

The Forum, which has been held nine times so far, serves as an important platform for active discussions based on mutual respect and reciprocity on various issues including energy and infrastructure, transportation and logistics, science and technology, ICT, textile, forestry, agriculture, environment, healthcare, and social and cultural issues.

It has successfully taken root as a regular multilateral cooperation mechanism by helping to expand substantive and future-oriented cooperation for the mutual prosperity of participating countries.

In view of the need to expand multilateral cooperation among the participating countries and to reaffirm their mutual commitment to achieving this objective, Korea and the five Central Asian countries have shared recognition of the necessity to strengthen the structure of the Korea-Central Asia Cooperation Forum, including joint efforts to establish its Secretariat. The participating countries decided to closely cooperate on the issue of the official launch of the Secretariat on the occasion of the 10th Korea-Central Asia Cooperation Forum.

At the forum, the participants considered development and realization of concrete projects in various spheres, including cooperation in healthcare.

Korea and the five Central Asian countries concurred to hold the 10th Forum in 2016 in Korea and to consider holding the subsequent Forums in one of the five Central Asian countries in odd-numbered years and in Korea in even-numbered years.

The Forum of cooperation “Republic of Korea – Central Asia was established in 2007 to strengthen and expand partnership between South Korea and Central Asian states in various spheres. Each year, the sides consider current state and perspectives of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
