TASHKENT SUBWAY EXPANDS BOUNDARIES

In 2017-2020, the government of Uzbekistan plans to invest $295 million in the development of Tashkent underground metro.

The development of the metropolitan subway network envisages the implementation of two projects for the construction of eight stations 10 km in length. The works will be financed from the government budget and the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan.

Works are currently underway on the completion of two stations in Yunusabad district. The personnel have already dug a pit for one of the metro stations. The construction of a new line for the so-called light terrestrial line to Sergeli, which will consist of six stations, has been launched as well.

The projects on the development of the Tashkent subway for the coming years envisage the construction of a total of 30 new stations. For example, the extension of the Uzbekistan line to Quyliq, one of the largest metropolitan markets, looks quite promising. It will be added with five new stations. Another destination will be developed through the extension of Chilanzar subway line from the terminal station Buyuk Ipak Yuli. It is intended to build three stations in the direction of Karasu.

In the coming years, the Tashkent subway is likely to get even more social. The government is currently considering the opportunity of providing free travel in the subway for pensioners from 2017. In order to avoid underground jams during rush hours, it is projected to grant the right to free travel for the elderly from 10.00 to 16.00.
