Yesterday, Uzbekistan delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov has taken part in the 9th Ministerial Conference “Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process”, in Tajikistan’s capital city Dushanbe, reports “Dunyo” IA correspondent.

According to Uzbekistan MFA, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani also attended the conference.

The participants of the conference discussed the issues of ensuring security and further development of regional economic cooperation, as well as strengthening confidence-building measures between the participating countries to help stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and its socio-economic recovery.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan noted the relevance of this format for achieving the goals outlined in the agenda of the Dialogue.

Mr. Abdulaziz Kamilov noted that Uzbekistan is interested in the formation of Afghanistan as a peaceful, independent and self-sufficient state. Lasting peace in Afghanistan is a guarantee of stability and prosperity for Central Asia. Concerning Afghanistan, Uzbekistan is pursuing a friendly policy based on the principles of good neighborliness, mutual respect and equality.

The minister emphasized the importance of a political settlement of the Afghan conflict and expressed Uzbekistan’s readiness to jointly implement infrastructure and economic projects in Afghanistan with the international community, in particular, the construction of the Surkhan – Puli-Khumri power line and the Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar railway.

The head of Uzbekistan delegation invited the participants of the forum to the International High-Level Conference “Central and South Asia: Regional Connectivity. Challenges and Opportunities” to be held in July this year in Tashkent.

The 2022 chairmanship of the Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process forum has been transferred to Afghanistan.
