UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS VISITS SUPREME COURT

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also met with Supreme Court Chairman Shayunus Gaziev, Justice Minister Muzraf Ikramov, Interior Minister Abdusalom Azizov, and Prosecutor-General Ihtiyor Abdullaev.

They discussed the current state and prospects for cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The nationwide reforms, they said, were taken to a new level. Democratic changes are aimed at upholding human rights and interests.

The 2017-2021 Action Strategy focuses on human rights, something that runs in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Based on the UN Human Rights Council’s recommendations, Uzbekistan has adopted and is now implementing a national action plan.

The speakers also said the UNDP and Uzbekistan’s National Human Rights Centre had signed a memorandum of understanding whereby the bodies will exchange their knowhow, develop educational materials, coach people on the topic, and develop programmes to protect human rights.

The meetings emphasised that Uzbekistan has laid a solid legal foundation for secure human rights.

The talks looked into the role of national legislation in human rights protection, international standards injected into local law, judicial mechanisms, and international experience.

Akmal Saidov, director of the Uzbek human rights centre, and Ulugbek Lapasov, advisor at Uzbekistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, also took part in the event.
