The Permanent Delegation of Uzbekistan to UNESCO held a meeting with Nasser bin Hamad Al-Hanzab, Chairperson of the UNESCO Executive Board and Permanent Representative of Qatar to UNESCO, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
The Executive Board is one of UNESCO’s governing bodies, tasked with reviewing the organization’s work programme and budget, monitoring programme implementation and examining reports on its activities.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the implementation of initiatives proposed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the opening ceremony of the historic 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, as well as to explore opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Qatar within the UNESCO framework.
During the meeting, the Chair of the Executive Board, Nasser bin Hamad Al-Hanzab, was presented with a “Roadmap” outlining steps for implementing President of Uzbekistan’s initiatives announced at the General Conference in Samarkand.
Nasser Hanzab expressed his sincere appreciation to the Uzbek side for the successful organization and high-level hosting of the historic General Conference in Samarkand, as well as for the exceptional hospitality extended to all participants. He emphasized that all attendees were deeply impressed by President Mirziyoyev’s address and the initiatives he announced at the opening session.
The Chair assured that, both in his capacity as UNESCO Executive Board Chair and as Qatar’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, he stands ready to provide full support to Uzbekistan in advancing these initiatives.
Particular attention during the meeting was given to Uzbekistan’s initiative to designate 19 November as the International Day of Documentary Heritage.
The Chair of the UNESCO Executive Board, Nasser Hamad Al-Hanzab, highlighted that this initiative addresses one of UNESCO’s most important and timely areas of work and is expected to make a significant contribution to the promotion, protection and preservation of humanity’s documentary heritage. He expressed hope that the initiative would receive broad support from other member states during the forthcoming 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, scheduled for 8-23 April 2026.
The discussion also focused on further strengthening cooperation between Uzbekistan and Qatar within UNESCO. Both sides expressed interest in deepening the practice of mutual support for initiatives and nominations at UNESCO, reflecting the high level of bilateral and multilateral collaboration between the two countries.
Additionally, the prospects for implementing new joint projects in Uzbekistan under UNESCO’s mandate were discussed, including initiatives aimed at safeguarding and preserving World Heritage sites with the active participation of the Qatari side.
