The meeting was held with the Director of the Europe Division of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Department Ana Raffo-Kayado at Uzatom Agency.
Uzbekistan considers technical cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as essential for the transfer and implementation of advanced ideas, technologies and experience in the nuclear field. This is a significant help in a number of areas for Uzbekistan, as for many other IAEA member states.
Currently, projects are being actively implemented with IAEA within the framework of technical assistance to increase radiation safety at oncological centers of the country, training personnel in radiation medicine and in laboratories of nuclear physics at the National University of Uzbekistan and Samarkand State University, as well as modernizing and enhancing radiation and nuclear safety of a research nuclear reactor of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
At the meeting, the parties discussed issues of joint projects implementation, including Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) and Site and External Events Design of NPP site (SEED mission), as well as the technical cooperation project for 2020-2021 “Development of human resources and national nuclear infrastructure for the implementation of the project to build a nuclear power plant in the Republic of Uzbekistan”.
Following the meeting, agreements were reached on further mutually beneficial cooperation with the IAEA in improving national legislation, training and retraining of service and technical personnel and conducting activities of the Technical Cooperation Program for 2020-2021 within the framework of implementing the project to build the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.
