Uzbekistan delegation attends UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy session

Uzbekistan delegation led by the Chairman of the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection Bakhrom Kuchkarov, attended the twenty-fifth session of the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy.

According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan in Geneva, the event was attended by experts in environmental protection and statistics from more than 30 countries and 10 international organizations.

The third Environmental Performance Review of Uzbekistan was discussed at the session. Bakhrom Kuchkarov presented a report on the state of the environment in the country and informed about the ongoing large-scale reforms in this area. Particular emphasis was placed on conservation of biodiversity, the use of natural resources, as well as the mitigation of Aral Sea disaster consequences and creation of favorable socio-environmental conditions in the Aral Sea zone.

Representatives from Switzerland and Romania noted the progress made by the Government of Uzbekistan in implementing international obligations on the environment and sustainable development, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Following the session, participants of the event adopted the third Environmental Performance Review of Uzbekistan. Chair of the Committee, Elisabete Quintas da Silva, emphasized that this review, which includes 17 chapters and more than 99 recommendations, is the most comprehensive report prepared by ECE experts.
