Uzbekistan's experience in human rights is presented in Geneva

An international workshop organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) took place in Geneva as part of the implementation of UN Human Rights Council Resolution 51/33. Uzbekistan’s experience was also presented at this event.

The workshop brought together representatives of the UN member states, international organizations, national human rights institutions, and the expert community at the Palace of Nations. The meeting aims to discuss strategies for the effective coordination of actions to implement international human rights obligations and to implement the recommendations of treaty bodies, as well as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Special attention was paid to the implementation of SDG achievements, particularly in the preparation of voluntary national reviews, as well as assistance in ensuring and strengthening national ownership and accountability.

In this context, the adoption of the resolution on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly “On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was highly appreciated.

Director of the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan and member of the UN Human Rights Committee A. Saidov emphasized in his speech that the effectiveness of implementing international human rights obligations directly depends on the quality and institutional maturity of national coordination mechanisms. He presented the national model of Uzbekistan, which includes:

– Development and implementation of national human rights strategies, which are a key element of Uzbekistan’s human rights policy. The first strategy, covering the period from 2020 to 2025, was approved in 2020 and marked a significant step in systematizing efforts to fulfill the country’s international obligations. The preparation of the draft Second National Human Rights Strategy 2030 has been completed.

– Implementation of a national reporting and follow-up mechanism.

– The use of a digital platform – National Recommendations Tracking Database (NDTR), which provides real-time monitoring of the fulfillment of international obligations.

– Active participation of Parliament and civil society institutions in human rights policy.

The participants highly appreciated Uzbekistan’s practice of developing and implementing national strategies, noting that the country’s experience can serve as a valuable guideline for other states seeking to strengthen their human rights infrastructure systematically.

Expert meetings and panel sessions were also held within the framework of the event, where ways to integrate human rights issues into educational programs, the professional development of specialists working in human rights, and the strengthening of the role of academic communities and scientific institutions in this process were discussed.

Following the event, participants emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue, knowledge sharing, and creating a platform for interaction among national mechanisms. Proposals were made to hold regional forums, including in Central Asia, and to expand the functionality of the virtual knowledge center, which is being developed with the support of OHCHR.

The Uzbekistan delegation’s participation in the workshop served as a clear indication of the country’s readiness to actively engage in global human rights processes, share its own experiences, and contribute to strengthening the international human rights protection system.
