Uzbekistan’s experience in protecting women’s rights highlighted at United Nations Headquarters

A representative of Uzbekistan spoke at a side event during the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) at the UN Headquarters in New York, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The side event titled “Using Digital and Intelligent Technologies to Protect Women’s Rights” was co-organized by China, Malaysia, Egypt, as well as UN entities - UN Women and UNFPA.

The event was dedicated to discussing the opportunities and challenges of using digital and intelligent technologies to promote gender equality and empower women and girls. Particular attention was given to bridging the digital gender divide, preventing technology-facilitated gender-based violence, and ensuring a safe and inclusive digital space.

During the event, representatives from governments, judiciaries, international organizations, and civil society shared their experiences and best practices in using digital technologies to protect women’s rights. Participants also discussed measures to enhance women and girls’ access to justice, improve digital literacy, and expand women’s participation in the tech sector.

Welcoming remarks at the event were delivered by high-ranking representatives of states and international organizations, including Lin Yi, Head of the Chinese Delegation, Deputy Minister, and Deputy Chairperson of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council of the PRC; Dr. Ahmad Faisal Muhamad, Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the UN; and Dr. Amani Asfour, Member of the National Council for Women and Head of the African Alliance for Women’s Empowerment.

The event was attended by UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous and UNFPA Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director Diene Keita.

During the main session, Dilnoza Muratova, Deputy Director of the National Centre of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights, delivered a report. In her speech, she outlined Uzbekistan’s experience in promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and expanding their opportunities amid the digital transformation. In particular, she noted that Uzbekistan is implementing a comprehensive state policy aimed at ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men, increasing women’s digital literacy, expanding their participation in innovation and technology, and preventing digital violence and discrimination.

The representative from Uzbekistan emphasized the importance of international cooperation in countering such challenges of the digital age as algorithmic gender bias, the digital divide, and online violence. She noted the need to develop effective legal mechanisms and use modern technologies to ensure women and girls have access to justice.

During the event, participants exchanged international best practices on using artificial intelligence, big data, and other digital solutions to protect women’s rights, improve the quality of social services, and expand women’s economic opportunities.

The Uzbek side’s participation in the event reaffirmed the country’s commitment to active engagement with the international community in promoting gender equality, as well as in developing innovative approaches to protecting the rights and interests of women and girls.
