Women – active participants in the social and political life of the country

Women are a vital human resource for any country’s economic and social well-being. Their full and equal participation in socio-political and socio-economic life is decisive for ensuring sustainable development and progress, reports “Dunyo” IA correspondent.

As noted in the interim report of the Election Observation Mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights on the Early Presidential Elections in Uzbekistan, reforms aimed at increasing women’s participation in public and political life have been underway since 2016, and the number of women in the parliament has increased to 48 of the 150 seats in the current parliament (32 per cent).

On 6 April 2023, the Senate confirmed amendments, which extended the scope of legal protection for victims of sexual abuse.

It should be noted that the issues of ensuring the active participation of women in public and political life are also reflected in the Development Strategy of New Uzbekistan for 2022-2026 as a priority goal. A Republican Commission on enhancing women’s role in society, gender equality, and the family has been established under the leadership of the Chairperson of the Senate. The Committee on Women and Gender Equality of the Senate has been established, which monitors the implementation of legislation in this area. The Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality until 2030 was approved to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and men in voting rights, public service, education, science, sports, and healthcare. It also aims to prevent harassment and violence in family relations and the upbringing of children. The Committee on Family and Women Affairs, as well as the Republican Fund for Supporting Women and Family, have been established.
