WORLD DAY FOR AUDIOVISUAL HERITAGE

In 2005, the 33rd session of the General Conference of UNESCO adopted a resolution which 27th of October was proclaimed as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.

The purpose of the celebration is to raise general awareness on the need of urgent action for the recognition of the significance of audiovisual documents as an integral part of national identity. The resolution stresses that the audiovisual heritage preservation requires special efforts because the materials containing information are highly vulnerable and short-lived.

Audiovisual documents, such as films, radio and television programs, audio and video are the main carriers of primary information in ХХ and ХХI centuries. Created in 1997, the International Register “Memory of the World” has now about 200 items of documentary heritage of global importance.

This year’s World Day is held under the slogan “Archives are in danger: the protection of the global identity.”

One of the main directions of the state policy in Uzbekistan under the leadership of President Islam Karimov is the revival of scientific and spiritual wealth and historical monuments of civilization values. The continuous large-scale work on the conservation, restoration and reconstruction of the unique monuments is a concern for the future.

The republic has the National Archive Fund, which over the years collected and constantly updated archive documents of historic, scientific, social, economic, political and cultural significance. The Fund is an integral part of the historical and cultural heritage of the peoples of Uzbekistan and a subject to permanent storage.

There are more than 6 million materials. Over 38 thousand of them are scientific and technical documentation, more than 16 thousand – film documents, over 402 thousand – documentary photographs, more than 14 thousand – phonodocuments. In addition, the insurance fund is formed, consisting of over 1,6 million negative frames.

It should be noted that the Central State Archive of Film, Photo and Phonodocuments was established with the independence of the Republic. This scientific-methodical institution assembled rich collection of unique documents, reflecting the history of Uzbekistan since the 60-ies of the XIX century till the present day.

Art recordings are the works of domestic and foreign composers, folk music, poetry, prose and dramatic works, performances by famous singers, folk singers, musical groups of the Republic, including Tamara Hanum, Tavakkal Kadyrov, Mamurjon Uzakov, Yunus Rajabi etc.

Film, photo and phonodocuments of the period for gaining state independence by Uzbekistan show the establishment of a democratic society, the formation of a new control system, the change in the functions and activities of the central authorities. They also reflect the historical facts and significant events, commemorated the international community’s the recognition of the sovereignty of Uzbekistan, the establishment of diplomatic relations and cooperation with international organizations and other countries.

In addition, the documents demonstrate progressive social and economic development of the Republic in the first years of independence, fundamental transformations in all spheres of state and society.
